Western Medical Acupuncture

While Traditional Acupuncture is widely taught and practiced in the United States and all over the world, because of its methaphysical nature, it is difficult to grasp by Western trained mind. This has led to research and development of what is known as Western Medical Acupuncture. Western Medical Acupuncture is an adaptation of Chinese Acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence based medicine. Its’ mechanism can best be described as stimulation of the nervous system and working primarily through segmental and extrasegmental neuromodulation along with other central nervous system effects. Western Medical Acupuncture is principally used to treat musculoskeletal pain, including myofascial trigger point pain. The emphasis of Western Medical Acupuncture varies. Predominantly it is used to treat musculoskeletal pain, including myofascial trigger point pain, however treatment of some internal organ dysfunction is also discussed.Western Medical Acupuncture uses the same acupuncture points as Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, but the reasoning for their selection is based on the knowledge of modern neuroanatomy. Overall strategy in Western Medical Acupuncture focuses both on local, as well as systemic treatment.
